Neurological Assessment

Nerve assessment is crucial in providing excellent foot health. A patient with altered sensation is at increased risk for foot complications, including ulceration, infection, and limb loss. Decreased nerve supply may also cause biomechanical and foot structure changes. A neurological assessment will provided for all patients. Further neurological testing will be done for those patients at increased risk.

Neuropathy is a nerve disorder that can affect any part of the body but is most commonly experienced in the extremities, such as the feet and hands. The condition occurs when nerves are damaged or dysfunctional, leading to a range of symptoms including tingling, numbness, burning sensations, and sharp pains.

Types of Neuropathy

There are various types of neuropathy, each with its own causes and symptoms. Some of the most common types include:

Peripheral Neuropathy: This type affects the peripheral nerves, which are responsible for transmitting signals between the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. Peripheral neuropathy often presents as numbness, tingling, and pain in the feet and hands.

Diabetic Neuropathy: People with diabetes are at risk of developing diabetic neuropathy, a type of peripheral neuropathy that results from prolonged high blood sugar levels. It can lead to serious complications if left untreated, including foot ulcers and infections.

Managing Neuropathy Symptoms

While neuropathy cannot always be cured, proper foot care is essential for individuals with neuropathy, as they may be more prone to foot injuries and infections. This includes inspecting your feet daily, wearing comfortable shoes, and avoiding walking barefoot.

If you're experiencing symptoms of neuropathy, it's important to seek professional help from a qualified chiropodist or healthcare provider. They can assess your condition, provide an accurate diagnosis, and recommend appropriate treatment options tailored to your needs.
