Partial Nail Avulsion
A Partial Nail Avulsion is a surgical procedure often used to treat an ingrown toenail (onychocryptosis). It involves the permanent removal of the portion of nailthat is causing pain, infection, or discomfort by growing into the surrounding skin. This procedure is very common and is performed by our skilled team of chiropodists.
A partial nail avulsion is typically recommended when:
-
Conservative treatments, such as regular trimming the nail, soaking the foot, or using antibiotics have failed.
-
The ingrown toenail is causing severe pain, infection, or swelling.
-
Recurrent ingrown toenails are present

The partial nail avulsion is a routine procedure done in clinic; it involves:
-
Anesthesia: The toe is frozen using a local anesthetic to ensure the procedure is painless.
-
Removal: A portion of the toenail, usually the part that is digging into the skin, is carefully cut and removed.
-
Chemical Application (Optional): In most cases, a chemical (phenol) is applied to the nail matrix to prevent the regrowth of the problematic part of the nail. This process is known as a Matrixectomy and is typically recommended for infected or persistent ingrowns.
-
Dressing: The wound is cleaned, and the toe is dressed with topical antibiotic, and sterile bandages.
Partial Nail Avulsions are minimally invasive, leaving most of the nail intact. The procedure is done in less than 45 minutes in our clinics. The partial nail avulsion boasts a short recovery time, with regular follow-up care conducted at no additional charge to ensure optimal procedure outcomes. Following procedure,
patients typically return to normal activity within 2 weeks.
This procedure is a safe and effective procedure providing significant relief from the pain and discomfort of an ingrown toenail.
